The patriot, fresh from Freedom’s councib come,

now pleased retires to lash his slaves at home;

or woo, perhaps, some black Aspasia’s charms,

and dream of freedom in his bondsmaid’s arms.

Merry’s seal is of ivory set in jade

and reads, predictably,

Amidst oohs and ahs and clucks and cackles

the Mandan girls take turns to wet

their fingers and rub the charcoal

from what must be York’s underlying white.

Needless to say, these are not girls but berdashes

who beckon him into their earth lodge

near a maelstrom
